The problem with hiring internet-savvy but light-on-common-sense hipsters to manage your social media company.

You end up with a PR disaster.

Video-sharing app Snapchat is reportedly under fire for greenlighting an ad offering viewers a choice between virtually 'slapping'  Rihanna or 'punching' her former partner singer Chris Brown.

The company was slammed on social media for approving the ad appearing to reference Mr Brown's 2009 conviction for assaulting his former girlfriend.

Mr Brown was sentenced to five years community service after he was found guilty of assaulting the popstar in a rented sportscar. The court heard he hit, choked and bit Rihanna and tried to push her from the car.

Former first daughter, Chelsea Clinton, even weighed into the debate criticising the social media company for making light of domestic violence.

A Snapchat spokesperson told BBC's Newsbeat the ad was approved in error and removed immediately.

"The advert was reviewed and approved in error, as it violates our advertising guidelines. We immediately removed the ad last weekend, once we became aware."

"We are sorry that this happened," they added.
