Fans of the DC Universe have taken to social media to share their excitement after the first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984 was released this morning - heralding the return of Gal Gadot in the titular role, along with a few surprise additions.

The 2-and-a-half minute trailer premiered at Comic Con Experience (CCXP 2019) in São Paulo, Brazil, Sunday local time - streaming live to Twitter fans all around the world.

“Nothing good is born from lies and greatness is not what you think,” Diana Prince AKA Wonder Woman (Gadot) narrates as the Amazonian warrior is seen cracking her lasso and lighting up the screen in some pretty remarkable golden eagle armour.

Once again directed by Patty Jenkins, the highly anticipated sequel is set to co-star Chris Pine and introduce Kristen Wiig as Barbara Minerva, known by DC fans as Wonder Woman's archenemy the Cheetah.

“We knew that Kristen Wiig would kill it, and she went beyond our wildest dreams,” Jenkins reportedly said at the CCXP event.
While Warner Bros. is remaining tight-lipped on what to expect from the sequel, the studio did release a one-line synopsis to get fans excited: “Diana Prince comes into conflict with the Soviet Union during the Cold War in the 1980s and finds a formidable foe by the name of the Cheetah.”

Aside from Wonder Woman's epic costumes and physical prowess, fans were particularly excited to see the return of the superhero's heart-throb, Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), whose character died in the 2017 movie. While it's not yet known in what capacity he returns, it could have something to do with the loved-up pair time-travelling to the 1980s.

Speaking at the trailer launch, Gadot, who is a producer on the new film, said that Wonder Woman is “quite lonely, she’s lost all of her friends over the years, and she’s doing what she needs to do" in the new movie.
