A stained glass window at the First Unitarian Universalist Church in New Orleans has been smashed with a brick less than 48 hours after a meeting against transgender violence was held at the church, reports the Times Picayune.
The widely publicised meeting was called after two transgender women of colour were murdered in New Orleans last month, and was well attended by the local community.
“At this time, we do not have evidence that would link the simple criminal damage to property incident today with Friday’s event,” NOPD spokesman Aaron Looney said in a statement.
The window was created by a Unitarian church member from Virginia and tells the story of the church’s recovery after it was flooded following Hurricane Katrina.
“If they wanted to pick a window that we had some real fresh emotional attachment to, that was the one,” the church’s Rev. Paul Beedle said.
The Reverend told the Times-Picayune that the act of vandalism would not deter the church.
"This does not change our resolve to stand by our transgender neighbors and any neighbors who are oppressed or marginalised in our community," he said.
