Stockholm is getting same-sex traffic lights for Pride

The Swedish city has taken inspiration from other European cities like Vienna and Madrid, and has replaced their regular traffic lights with 'same-sex' pedestrian lights.

Stockholm’s annual Pride Festival starts on July 31 and to celebrate, the city is installing traffic lights around the Östermalm district that feature same-sex couples holding hands.

"We want to show that we're an LGBT-friendly city – and show that even in tough traffic! We stand for one Stockholm for all," the city's deputy mayor and head of Stockholm's traffic division Daniel Helldén told The Local.

At the end of the month, 48 of the celebratory traffic lights will appear around Pride Park—one of the main venues for the largest Pride festival in Scandinavia.

The lights will only be a temporary installation, and will be taken down at the end of the festival in August.

"It would, of course, be nice to have them up all year round," Helldén said but added that the Swedish Transport Agency would have the final say.

Stockholm is the latest city to install the Pride traffic lights—Vienna was the first do so when it hosted Eurovision in 2015. Madrid recently followed suit for the World Pride celebrations.
