The flyers were placed inside Stanton College Preparatory School, Florida, earlier this week in the lead-up to the prom, happening this weekend.
According to the New York Times, the posters - placed in a number of locations around the school - feature photos of dresses with low necklines, leg slits and low-cut backs accompanied by the text: "Going to Stanton Prom? NO YOU’RE NOT.”
A fourth photo showed what was decidedly a satisfactory dress with “Going to Stanton Prom? YES YOU ARE. GOOD GIRL.”
One student at the school, Lily Willingham tweeted a picture of the posters from her account @LILwillingham, reacting to the use of the phrase “good girls”.
Anger turned to action when the prep school's student body decided to change the theme of the scheduled ‘Tourist Day’ – part of Spirit Week where the school tries to increase morale with a number of different days and events – to ‘Women’s Day.’
Students backed the change, reacting en-mass by creating new attire for the updated theme, adding purple female symbols to t-shirts and wearing purple hijabs to recognise International Women's Day. Others also tweeted using the social media hashtag #SCPGOODGIRL.
