Support of LGBTIQ+ community drops in young Republicans

Among Republicans between the ages of 18 and 29, support for LGBTIQ+ rights fell from 74 per cent to 63 per cent.

A survey in the United States has found that support for LGBTIQ+ people is falling among members of the Republican party.

Conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute, the research found that support for anti-discrimination policies dropped from 61 per cent in 2015 to 56 per cent in 2018, with the sharpest decline found in Republicans between the ages of 18 and 29, where support fell from 74 per cent to 63 per cent.

According to The Hill, the PRRI survey, which involved interviews with 54,357 people, additionally found that overall support for the LGBTIQ+ community remains steady, with 69 per cent of American favouring protective anti-discrimination policies in 2018, a drop of only 1 per cent from the previous year.

The survey also found that a majority of Americans — 62 per cent — support same-sex marriage while 30 per cent are opposed to it.
