NYC-based writer Chelsea Fagan went viral on Twitter over the weekend, after tweeting about a particularly strange high school adaption of Jonathon Larson's iconic 1996 rock opera, Rent.
She shared a story told to her by a bartender, who attended a school that reportedly chose the influential play as their drama production one year.
However, rather than take the opportunity to sensitively handle the heavy topics that Rent presents, and educate the teenage cast and audience about drugs, needle sharing, safe sex, and much more - the school decided to remove all references to HIV / AIDS. Instead, they adapted the production, so the characters had diabetes instead.
