The internet is upset at Kylie Jenner’s highly questionable Handmaid’s Tale party

"Can someone please reassure me that 'Kylie Jenner's Handmaid's Tale–Themed Party' is a phrase I hallucinated?"

Kylie Jenner has upset the internet.

Again.

This time, the socialite and so-called 'self-made billionaire' has ruffled feathers by transforming her California mansion into the fictional totalitarian Republic of Gilead and throwing a Handmaid's Tale-themed birthday party.

The move was particularly controversial given reproductive rights advocates across the United States are currently fighting a slate of terrifying new laws, including a measure passed in Alabama that will make abortion at any point of a pregnancy illegal, with no exceptions for rape or incest.

The party, which took place on Saturday, was thrown for Jenner's friend Anastasia "Stassie" Karanikolaou's birthday and included Gilead flags, the show's trademark red draperies, and wine glasses with phrases from the show cut into them.
"Kylie Jenner hosting a Handmaid's Tale themed birthday party is actually a perfect analogy for how rich people will be perfectly fine if Roe v. Wade is overturned," one commentator tweeted.

"They'll always find a way to afford and access abortion - low income folks won't."

Another wrote: "With all of the serious reproductive rights fights that are going on, Kylie Jenner gave a ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ themed birthday. This entire family is tone-deaf due to privilege, and don’t you forget it."

Along with the anti-abortion bill passed in Alabama, Georgia recently passed a bill banning abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, which inspired a number of Hollywood big names, including Busy Philipps and Jameela Jamil, to share their personal abortion stories.

With the United States becoming increasingly Gilead-like, it's unsurprising that people are up in arms over Jenner's seemingly out-of-touch celebration of a fictional world so many are desperately trying to avoid.

Season 3 of The Handmaid's Tale and the critically acclaimed SBS podcast 'Eyes on Gilead' is available to stream on SBS.
