Despite same-sex marriage being illegal in Singapore, the nephew of Singapore's Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loon, has announced that he's married his longtime partner.

Li Huanwu, who is also the grandson of the country’s first prime minister, Lee Kuan, married his partner, Heng Yirui, in an intimate ceremony in Cape Town, South Africa.

Yirui, a veterinarian, shared a photo of the pair on social media, writing: “Today I marry my soul mate. Looking forward to a lifetime of moments like this."
Speaking to the South China Morning Post on Saturday, Huanwu said: “Today would have been unimaginable to us growing up."

He added: "We are overjoyed to share this occasion in the glowing company of friends and family.”

While Taiwan recently became the first country in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage, Singapore continues to trail behind, with same-sex sexual activity considered illegal.

In 2014, a Singapore Supreme Court ruling upheld the country's ban on same-sex relations between consenting adult men. Additionally, no laws exist in the country to protect members of the LGBTIQ+ from discrimination.
