The organisers of Copenhagen Pride have released a web extension for Chrome that allows users to avoid ticking gender boxes online.
The group has produced a video pointing out that while the internet constantly prompts users to assert their gender—the same questions would be considered bizarre IRL.
The clip shows a series of shop assistants and waiters asking their customers whether they are male or female and states: “If it’s a weird question in real life, it’s a weird question on the internet.”
The new extension is easily downloaded to Chrome and allows anyone to browse the web without gender boxes popping up on sites such as Facebook.
"At Copenhagen Pride we are proud to represent one of the first countries in the world to stop defining being transgender as a mental illness," the group writes on its site. "But the gender struggle does not end there. With Gender Free Internet we wish to give people all over the world the same respect and recognition by making it possible to surf the internet without being confronted with the discrimination of gender boxes."
“Today gender identity is a shifting landscape, and a lot of people don’t feel like complying with the gender norms.
“To some people, gender specific form boxes are just as annoying and intrusive as ads on YouTube are to people trying to watch a cute cat video.
"The difference is that YouTube videos don’t hurt anyone´s feelings."
