The story about Chinese lesbian billionaires that never was

A post that went viral on Twitter was actually K-pop fan fiction.

Teen Twitter user Abby Fry sent the internet into a frenzy when she uploaded a photo of two women accompanied by the caption: “[BREAKING] Lesbian Chinese Billionaires, Meng Mei Qi and Wu Xuan Yi, marry. Making them the richest couple alive.”

The post has been liked nearly 40,000 times and elicited enthusiastic responses from Twitter users around the world.

Unfortunately—as many Twitter users were quick to point out—the women in the photo are not Chinese lesbian billionaires but members of the K-Pop group Cosmic Girls (also known as WJSN).

The image of group members Meng and Wu was taken at the Beijing Film Festival and uploaded to Weibo.

Fry told BuzzFeed News that she saw the photo online and uploaded it with a new caption as a joke.

“I thought they looked like they were at a wedding with the dresses they were wearing, and the dresses sure looked expensive,” she said.

The teenager assumed that fans of the group would immediately pick up on her post as an obvious fake but said it “just shows the power of what we want to happen”.

Some K-pop fans ran with the fan fiction and added a murder story into the mix.

While the tweet fooled thousands of social media users, K-pop fans were ultimately delighted by the prank.
