In a victory for disgruntled fans around the world, the cast of Sense8 will return to Netflix on June 8th for a two-hour "movie finale" conclusion to the previously-axed supernatural series.
Co-created by the Wachowski sisters — both of whom are transgender — the series follows eight strangers from different backgrounds (known as “sensates”) who telepathically pick up each other’s feelings and teleport into their respective lives.
The show gained a solid fan base after offering audiences a number of diverse and fleshed-out LGBTIQ+ characters, including Nomi Marks, played by trans actress Jamie Clayton, and gay couple Lito and Hernando.
Following the show's cancellation, fans created a petition which collected over 500,000 signatures for the show to be renewed for a third season.
Last year, co-creator Lana Wachowski took to social media to share the news that the petition had been successful.
“Improbably, unforeseeably, your love has brought Sense8 back to life. (I could kiss every single one of you!),” she wrote.
She continued: “After that … if this experience has taught me anything, you NEVER know.”
Praised as “bold, emotional, stunning, kick ass, and outright unforgettable" by Cindy Holland, Netflix’s vice president for original content, the show will return to Netflix on June 8th with a two-hour conclusion.
While most fans celebrate the news, others still have their eyes on the prize - petitioning for a full third season, which Wachowski has reportedly already written, to be produced.
