Venice Beach locals have prevented the Pride lifeguard tower from losing its rainbow paint job after a successful campaign to keep the tower as a symbol of LGBT+ acceptance.
“We received 11,000 signatures on a petition from that area, saying no, we love it, we’d really like to keep it,” Sheila Kuehl told the Daily News.
“The lifeguards and fire department are very strongly in favour of this, in case anybody wonders what it’s like for them to have a rainbow tower on the beach,” Kuehl added.
The President and founder of Venice Pride Grant Turck said: “This lifeguard tower represents a new way for the LGBT community to feel included. It’s a monument to acceptance.”
The tower was due to be restored to its original blue colour this month but activist Colin Campbell created a Change.org petition, urging Angelenos to help it become a permanent public art project.
“At a time when so much of what the LGBT community and its allies fought for is under attack, the L.A. County Board of Supervisors should save the Venice Pride Flag Lifeguard Tower,” the petition read.
“The tower serves as an important visual reminder that Los Angeles will always welcome people no matter whether they are gay, straight, lesbian, bi, transgender, queer or questioning.”
