New Mexican telenovela Juntos el Corazón Nunca se Equivoca - which translates to Together the Heart is Never Wrong - has made Mexican TV history, Reuters reports, by becoming the first locally produced telenovela to feature a gay couple as lead characters.
The series, a spin-off of another telenovela (Mi Marido Tiene Mas Familia / My Husband Has More Family) follows the story of teenage couple Aristóteles “Aris” Córcega and Cuauhtémoc “Temo” López, who move to Mexico City together in order to start university.
And telenovela fans are loving it.
In an interview with Reuters, Santiago Pineda, a writer for the show, said: “It shows that there are a lot of people, and a lot of young people of different ages who are interested in being able to connect with this kind of story.”
Pineda continued: “We wanted it to be a friendlier approach so that everyone could see that Aristoteles and Temo, beyond their sexual orientation, were both people with dreams, goals, fears and aspirations."
"The series makes visible and normalises the LGBT movement," Emilio Osorio, the 16-year-old actor who portrays Aristóteles in the series, stated at a recent screening.
According to Mexican LGBTIQ+ organisations, the series could lead to more meaningful change in local society - especially considering the fact telenovelas have been known to influence local views.
“For people of my generation, a lot of us had to have a delayed adolescence, because at that age, it was unimaginable to show affection or even think of having a romantic relationship,” Alex Orue, head of It Gets Better Mexico, said.
