A school in Somerset, England was forced to send a rather awkward letter expressing concerns about the name of an imaginary friend of one of their students.
The very delicately worded note says that the school is happy for children to invent characters, calling it an “imaginative and creative pastime”, but that the name ‘Wildo the Dildo’ was somewhat inappropriate for a 10-year-old to use.
The letter goes on to say that the sex-toy related name had raised some concerns, even though their students were unaware of the meaning.
“On further discussion, none of the children said they knew what it meant, but were aware that it was an inappropriate word to be using,” it read.
The child’s father, Paul Hunt, said it was the “funniest thing I’ve ever read” when he posted the letter to Twitter.
“We were already aware of what had happened because he’d told us about it the previous day.
“We were surprised to receive a letter about it though.”
Hunt says that his child was “mortified” that he’d innocently used the rhyming name for his imaginary friend, and that they didn’t need to discuss it further with him.
“We were surprised that the teachers had thought it necessary to write the letter at all, let alone be explicit about what the word was.
“So yes we certainly did have a good laugh about it.”
