A tweet about a woman's ex-girlfriend's homophobic mother has gone viral for a more ridiculous reason than usual.

Earlier this week, Gabrielle Korn, editor-in-chief at Nylon magazine, tweeted: “I dated a girl in college whose mom tried to talk her out of being gay by telling her she’d have to go through life w/out someone to open jars for her.”
She continued: “At the time it was upsetting but in hindsight I kind of love that jar opening was the only use for men she could think of.”
“For the record everyone I have been opening my own jars ~if you know what I mean~ just fine for 11 years,” she concluded.

While some social media users jokingly raised other reasons men can be helpful, including reaching things on top shelf, Korn simply wasn't having a bar of it.

"I'm glad so many of you are bringing up 'reaching for things that are high up' as a use. Last week my girlfriend picked me up so I could grab a wine bottle that had rolled to the back of the top of the fridge. I'm 5'4" she's 5'7" and together we're unstoppable," she replied.

Gay, straight, male or female - it seems that everyone, on occasion, has to "open their own jar" so to speak.
