Capping off their annual Pride week celebrations, Tokyo's LGBTIQ+ community have come together to demand a more progressive future, making an optimistic statement during this year's Rainbow parade.

The event, which has taken place annually since 2011, saw an estimated 7,000 people march to Yoyogi Park, where a party was held.

A record number marched, chanting "queer power", "my body, my choice", and "Tokyo no hate".

"I have never seen this many people in the Yoyogi event space!" One attendee tweeted.

The theme for this year's event was "love and equality".

“Everyone is equal in love. We seek no special rights, but the same thing, the same way," organisers said, according to reports from PinkNews.

They continued: "The freedom to love. That basic freedom is what we want to achieve.”

Despite a majority of Japanese people supporting same-sex marriage, there are currently few protections and anti-discrimination laws for members of the LGBTIQ+ community.
