Tumblr users are mourning their creative freedom after the social media giant announced that it would be permanently banning adult content from December 17th.

The news came as a shock to the site's millions of users, for whom the platform had become a cherished outlet beyond the censorship of Instagram and Facebook.

According to reports from The Verge, the Tumblr's new ban will include "explicit sexual content" as well as "female-presenting nipples".

“We’ve given serious thought to who we want to be to our community moving forward,” CEO Jeff D’Onofrio wrote in a blog post. “We’ve realised that in order to continue to fulfill our promise and place in culture, especially as it evolves, we must change.”

“There are no shortage of sites on the internet that feature adult content," D’Onofrio continued.

"We will leave it to them and focus our efforts on creating the most welcoming environment possible for our community."

However, tumblr users expressed outrage at the decision.

"Banning all adult content hurts many artists and sets a dangerous precedent," one user tweeted.

"Sexuality is not a crime."
