Twitter has been torn over how to react to Liberal MP Tim Wilson’s engagement to his long-term partner Ryan Bolger on the floor of parliament today.

As debate began on the same-sex marriage bill that was passed by the Senate last week, an emotional Wilson decided to publicly pop the question to his boyfriend of nine years.

He spoke of how they’d first gotten engaged years earlier but were constantly asked: “Why bother?” as marriage equality remained light years away.

Wilson then turned to his partner, who was sitting in the public gallery, and said: "There’s only one thing left to do.

“Ryan Patrick Bolger, will you marry me?”

Bolger replied "Yes" and the lower house erupted into applause before Wilson exclaimed, “Well, chuck that in the memoirs of the Hansard."

The heartfelt speech and proposal has some Twitter users conflicted between disagreeing with Wilson's political stance on certain issues, and cheering on his right to marry the love of his life.

But more than a few Twitter users looked past political differences to applaud the first ever same-sex marriage proposal in the House of Representatives.
