A wide-spread audio clip of a robot saying either “Yanny” or “Laurel” has inspired lesbian fan fiction on social media, with users turning the mind-boggling viral sensation into the internet's favourite new couple.

Dubbed the new "Gold and White/Blue and Black dress", everyone from the Kardashian family to Ellen DeGeneres have become involved in the debate, taking to social media to share whether they hear the name "Yanny" or "Laurel".

However, the audio clip has inspired more than just passionate debate - it's become the catalyst for romance, with Twitter user Kodi Mac penning a moving fan-fiction tribute.

"Yanny's a biker chick with a chip on her shoulder who falls for Laurel; a glam rockabilly girl with a penchant for sarcasm who doesn't take Yanny's shit," she wrote.

She continued: "Chaos and romance ensue."

"Yanny met Laurel at a drag race, where Laurel and her current girlfriend - one of the racers - had just broken up," Mac added.

"Yanny, inspired by the pure rage of their argument or something, decides to enter the race last minute. She doesn't know why at the time. But it's love."

Twitter users were instantly engrossed in the modern day love story.

"I'm listening," one wrote. "I'm here for this," tweeted another.

"I WANT to read this!"

All romance aside, social media users have suggested that frequency may determine whether you hear "Yanny" or "Laurel", with Laurel being best heard on lower frequencies and Yanny on higher. The New York Times has created a tool that allows listeners to hear both, which you can check out here
