In an interview on Know Wave’s Koopz Tunes radio show this week, Tyler the Creator said he was in a same-sex relationship when he was fifteen.
"I had a boyfriend when I was fifteen in f***ing Hawthorne [California],” he commented.
"If that's not open-minded, I don't know what the f*** that is."
On his recently released fourth studio album Flower Boy, Tyler raps “Next line will have 'em like ‘whoa’, I’ve been kissing white boys since 2004.”
The Odd Future co-founder has previously been under fire for making homophobic comments—with organisations such as GLAAD condemning his lyrics.
"Tyler and Odd Future are padding their lyrics with anti-gay slurs and dangerous, violent rhetoric," Matt Kane, GLAAD's Associate Director of Entertainment Media wrote in 2011.
"But there is nothing ironically clever about hate speech, particularly when a significant part of those listening are adolescents seeking to emulate their favourite artists. It’s simply irresponsible and destructive.”
Since his interview on Koopz Tunes gained attention, Tyler has since tweeted that saying he had a boyfriend was just a “figure of speech”.
“Figure of speech to get koopz 'open minded' point across, i was single at 15 haha,” he wrote.
