5 things we can’t wait for in season 3 of 'The Good Fight'

From bizarre soliloquies to singing, there’s so much to look forward to in one of the best, and most surprising, shows around.

Season three of SBS’s The Good Fight not only ups the drama, dealing with everything from #MeToo to racial tension, but also the blissfully bizarre that the legal drama has become well known for. And there’s a huge new cast member in Michael Sheen.

There are too many things to mention that we can’t wait to see, so we’ve narrowed it down to our top five.

Michael Sheen as the morally bankrupt Roland Blum

In a deliciously larger-than-life role, the venerable Sheen (Masters of Sex) joins the cast as attorney Roland Blum – a character based on the late lawyer Roy Cohn, mentor and personal lawyer to now President Donald Trump – who sinks his tendrils into Reddick, Boseman & Lockhart.

He’s obscene, partial to fentanyl lollipops, ethically bankrupt and a bad influence on Maia Rindell (Rose Leslie), who is forced to co-counsel a case with him.

We’ve waited a long time to see Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) and husband Kurt McVeigh (Gary Cole, who has a greater presence this season) live together after a rocky on-off marriage marked by Kurt’s affair and political ideologies that couldn’t be more opposite – she anti-Trump, he pro.

“I’m happy. Am I ridiculous? Tell me everything will be all right?” Diane says to Kurt in a post-coital admission, after her Trump-induced turmoil of last season. 

“What can go wrong?” he replies.

A hell of a lot, it would seem. Not only does Diane suspect Kurt is having an affair but he’s taken on an uncomfortably close affiliation with the Trump family.

How the absurdist Trump commentary will be trumped

The Good Fight co-creators Michelle and Robert King have never been afraid to skewer the Trump presidency with an absurdist approach (last season it was unclear whether or not the president really houses a pot-bellied pig in the White House Map Room). That’s upped in season three – Diane gives a soliloquy to a bullet wound that speaks with the voice of Trump. You read that correctly.

Diane’s frustration with the Trump administration reaches a new level as she and law partner Liz Reddick-Lawrence (Audra McDonald) join an underground anti-Trump women’s resistance group that uses underhanded methods, such as disseminating fake news, in an attempt to bring him down. 

But Diane’s involvement will see her ethics challenged as never before, and uncover a mean ability to hurl an axe.

The singing!

The thought of the talented cast belting out a tune is music to our ears, but it won’t be in the form of a musical episode. We will, however, get to hear Baranski and McDonald sing Prince’s ‘Raspberry Beret’ and Sheen sing The Jackson 5’s ‘I’ll Be There’ karaoke style.
