Cusack, plays chauffeur to recalcitrant actress Rebecca DeMornay who accidently runs over the wife of family man John C McGinley. Racing her to the motel to call for help he discovers from the night manager John Hawkes that all the phones are out. Gradually the hotel fills with reluctant guests - beautiful prostitute, Amanda Peet, a couple of young newlyweds, a policeman, Ray Liotta, and prisoner, Jake Busey. Meanwhile there is an urgent midnight meeting elsewhere with a judge and lawyers, plus psychiatrist Alfred Molina to try to stave off the execution of convicted murderer Pruitt Taylor Vince.
There is a definite sense of unreality about the murderous proceedings at the motel where one by one characters are killed off. This is a mildly effective schlock horror thriller from director James Mangold and writer Michael Cooney. The air of unreality actually doesn\'t help. And when you get to the final twist you feel as if you\'ve been conned. John C McGinley\'s hairstyle evokes suspicion, as do the outfits of both Rebecca DeMornay and Amanda Peet. And when you\'re told that the motel is on the site of an Indian burial ground, the Indians died because of lack of water while it\'s pouring cats and dogs on this particular night you feel sure someone is having a joke at your expense. A \"B-Grade\" movie with a classy cast.
