Lovers of sword and sorcery epics will probably find Kull the Conqueror a middling effort. Producer Raffaella de Laurentiis who made the two Conan films with Arnold Schwarzenegger cast Kevin Sorbo from the television series Hercules, the Legendary Journeys, as the barbarian Kull who unexpectedly finds himself the king of Valusia. Not surprisingly the king`s son Taligaro - Thomas Ian Griffith - is a bit put out at being bypassed for the throne and evokes a 3000 year old sorceress called Akivasha to bewitch Kull, marry him and then kill him on his wedding night. Kull escapes death and embarks on a quest with slave girl Zareta - Karina Lombard - to find the secret power to quell the evil sorceress ...This is all pretty ho-hum stuff, the special effects are corny, the dialogue the same. Kevin Sorbo looks good in a loincloth, so does Karina Lombard for that matter. There`s a sense of B-grade in this film in just about every department. It`s director John Nicolella`s first feature film, he`s produced and directed a lot of television. Admittedly this is not my favorite genre, but if it was I`d like it to be a bit more convincing, a bit smarter.
