The time is the middle of the 14th century, and William Thatcher, presumably an ancestor of another Margaret, is a likely lad who yearns to be a knight so that he can take part in jousting tournaments. Jousting seems to be the middle ages equivalent to boxing or football matches. The trouble is, William isn`t a nobleman he`s the son of a thatcher. But he and his mates, sorry, squires, Mark Addy and Alan Tudyk, plus the poet Geoffrey Chaucer, Paul Bettany, fix him up to challenge the black hearted Rufus Sewell and win the hand of Lady Jocelyn, Shanynn Sossamon.....This appalling film, directed by Brian Helgeland (who, though it`s hard to believe, co scripted L.A. Confidential) is so intent on pleasing little boys in the audience that it completely forgets that it`s possible to make an adventure film grown-ups can appreciate as well, Gladiator is the proof of that. But A Knight`s Tale, with its puerile anachronisms, its stupid jokes, its dreadful music score, its boring plot (just a series of jousting tournaments with bits of inane dialogue in between) will only please the most undemanding of teenagers. If Heath Ledger wants to establish himself as a Hollywood star, his agent should find him better roles than this.
