Bandwagon is the debut feature of yet another American independent writer/director John Schultz. He`d been making `The Making of....` promotional films for Amblin Entertainment, Steven Spielberg`s company, but when it came to his own film he headed back to his roots in North Carolina.... Bandwagon is a film about four misfits who get together to form a band.... they are Tony, played by newcomer Lee Holmes, he`s the obsessive and horrendously shy singer/songwriter. He originally teams up with local record store clerk Charlie - Matthew Hennessey - a garrulous soul who really has nothing much to say.... and then the band`s augmented by the spaced-out Wynn - Kevin Corrigan and wild card Eric - Steve Parlavecchio.... This is an amiable and funny film, but it`s almost as if American indies have developed their own brand of whimsy, there`s a sameness to many of them now..... Bandwagon doesn`t go anywhere in particular except on the road - and that has its tedious moments. Director Schultz maintains this is not a film about a band, it`s about the characters who are part of it... and for much of the film they`re endearing and amusing.... Schultz elicits entertaining performances from his mostly new cast and has an eye for the comedy of situations. Special mention must go to Greg Kendall for his ultra-pop music.
