At a casino located in a moonscape-like no-man\'s-land the owner Samuel Berg, Max von Sydow, calls his protege Federico, Eusebio Poncela, when one of the roulette players has a run of luck. A touch from Federico and the man\'s luck dries up. Federico has been raised by Samuel after he survived an earthquake. His luck is eerily out of the ordinary. But Federico wants out. Before he goes he\'s embraced by Samuel who literally sucks the luck out of him. Seven years later Federico tracks down Tomas, Leonardo Sbaraglia, the only survivor of a plane crash to use his luck with the aim of ultimately confronting Samuel. Tomas is a bankrobber and is being hunted down by policewoman Sara, Monica Lopez. Meanwhile Federico puts Tomas through a series of luck trials, some of which are truly bizarre. A mournful mood permeates this film, there is no joy in being lucky if one\'s luck is at the expense of so much misery for others.
It\'s been very well directed by Fresnadillo, shot on his home island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. It\'s a film that you can either think is silly - and that\'s a real possibility - or you\'ll find something very intriguing about this world of manipulation of chance. Performances are uniformly impressive.
