An engrossing film about the lengths to which people go to avoid poverty.

In her first feature, Catalina Sandino Moreno is Maria Alvarez, a fearless and rebellious teenager not satisfied with what life has to offer in Colombia. Working in a flower plantation, where she is begrudgingly allowed only one toilet break a day, Maria is labelled 'difficult'.

Pregnant and unwilling to enter a loveless marriage, she sets out to find a better job in the city. She's approached about becoming a drug mule and the lure of attaining a better life is irresistible.

What follows is a graphic portrayal of her harrowing experience. This is a remarkable film that had me on the edge of my seat. Masterfully constructed with intense performances, this film confronts the reality of what poverty will make people do.

Moreno's sensitive portrayal of Maria is so emotionally powerful it turns the observer into a participant on her frightening journey. An eye opening experience filled with humility.
