Hard Rain is the title and pretty wet is the result - Christian Slater stars as Tom, an armoured car guard whose delivery of $3 million is thwarted by too much water - Jim, Morgan Freeman, leads a gang of four who`ve got their sights on the soggy loot but before they can lay their damp hands on it Tom hides it. A cat and mouse game ensues involving town sheriff Randy Quaid and Minnie Driver who`s renovating the local church.
I must say this film lays its cards pretty much on the table - the plotting`s not particularly believable but subtlety`s not the name of the game here - action is and on that level it`s reasonably effective. With attractive leads, Morgan Freeman for once doesn`t play a good guy, and some well-constructed action sequences - director Mikael Salomon`s background is in visual effects and cinematography - it lurches from one cliffhanger to the next - don`t linger too long on story or character. It was shot by Australian Peter Menzies - another DOP from down under who`s made his mark on Hollywood with films like A Time to Kill, Die Hard with a Vengeance and The Getaway. Not a film to linger long in the memory - it`s an enjoyable popcorn time-filler.
