Filmmaker Baz Luhrmann is reportedly in talks to direct a big screen adaption of TV series Kung Fu.

The Hollywood Reporter says Luhrmann is "chewing" over the idea.

If the Australian director signs on, he would rewrite the script from XXX scribe Rich Wilkes before filming, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Late actor David Carradine played Shaolin monk Kwai Chang Caine in the martial arts US TV series from 1972 to 1975.

According to the report Legendeary Pictures has been trying to turn the 1070s show into a film for years.

Luhrmann opened Strictly Ballroom The Musical in Sydney on Saturday night.

Australian stars to attend the opening included Kylie Minogue, Joel Edgerton, Rachel Griffiths and Jack Thompson.
