Big Momma`s House Review

Martin Lawrence plays Malcolm, an FBI agent assigned to Cartersville Georgia with his partner Paul Giamatti to wait for the possible arrival of an escaped murderer at the home of the grandmother of the escapee`s former girlfriend Sherry (Nia Long). are you with me? But just as Sherry`s about to arrive Big Momma, the grandmother, is called away so Malcolm, already established as an expert in disguise, takes on the role of Big Momma, with ever so many predictable results...It`s all so improbable and yet it wears a well-worn path through childbirth - Big Momma`s a midwife - romance - yes Sherry and Malcolm share a bed together in a thunderstorm just like when she was little, and taking on paternity to Sherry`s young son Trent (Jascha Washington). There are the bevy of women who bake cakes and coo and carry on and it`s all so relentlessly tedious and worse, unfunny. The director was Raja Gosnell who edited many of Chris Columbus` hits like Mrs. Doubtfire but mainly at fault is Darryl Quarles and Don Rhymer`s screenplay which never rises beyond the banal. David`s Comment: An extended drag act, with Martin Lawrence playing in heavy make up the kind of role Eddie Murphy might have taken. Most of this laboured farce really isn`t very funny, and it`s utterly predictable from start to finish.
