Bella, Anna Thomson, used to earn more in finance but found she preferred people so she?s a waitress in a diner where amongst others a trio of elderly men come to squabble in that New York style. Paul, Robert Modica is one of them, he?s a widower and he?s lonely. He gets up the courage to answer a lonely hearts ad from Emily, Louise Lasser, but things don?t seem to get any easier with maturity. Meanwhile Bella, discouraged by her mistress status to a seemingly untalented and married theatre director, is encouraged by her unloving mother to go out with Bruno, Jamie Harris (son of Richard), who has, to his horror, just had his young daughter and his ex-wife?s recent baby dumped on him. It?s hard for lonely people to expose themselves. With some really interesting performances ? a very quirky one from Anna Thomson, a marvellous one from Louise Lasser and also from Robert Modica ? writer/director Kollek establishes a slightly bizarre world that connects and then opts for fairy tale at the end which seems a bit of a cop-out actually because what?s gone before had value. His characters are interesting, involving, he writes them well. His visual style is limited but perfectly adequate for the focus he wants to achieve.
