Oscar winning actress Cate Blanchett has reportedly escaped unharmed after she was involved in a car accident on the set of Todd Haynes' new period film Carol.

Blanchett and co-star Rooney Mara were filming a car scene when the brakes of their classic 1950s Dodge failed, according to US media reports.

An on-set source says Blanchett and Mara started "screaming at the top of their lungs" as the car sped past the film crew.

Blanchett managed to steer the car to the right before it slammed into a nearby wooden fence.

Both stars were uninjured.

"Everyone came running ... as the camera guy started dialling 911, he heard Cate yelling `We're OK, we're good. The car isn't good, but we're fine'" the National Enquirer magazine quotes the source as saying.

Carol tells the story of young department-store clerk Therese Belivet (Mara) who falls in love with an older, married woman (Blanchett). It is being filmed in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Fellow Australian Mia Wasikowska was originally set to play Therese but pulled out of the project because of scheduling conflicts.
