Tor - Kirsten Dunst - is the newly elected captain of the cheerleading squad in the upper middle class Rancho Carne High School. The team has won the national cheerleading championships for the past six years, so you can imagine how shocked she is to discover that their winning routine is not original. The team from the more disadvantaged East Compton High resents the fact that their moves have been pinched year after year and they`re determined to claim the trophy this time round. They`re led by the charismatic Isis - Gabrielle Union. But with the support of newcomer Missy - Eliza Dushku - Tor turns the team in new directions.... and it doesn`t hurt that she`s quite attracted to Missy`s brother Cliff - Jesse Bradford....... This is a debut big screen feature from director Peyton Reed and he puts energy into the pace and lends a nicely satirical edge to the film, which fortunately doesn`t take itself too seriously. Relative newcomer to the big screen Eliza Dushku impresses in a way that Kirsten Dunst doesn`t. Dunst is also outclassed by the vibrant Gabrielle Union. It`s interesting seeing Jesse Bradford as a young adult in movies after his wonderful debut in Steven Soderberg`s King of the Hill, unfortunately he`s at a bit of a loose end in this although it`s been quite nicely written by Jessica Bendinger, it`s her first produced screenplay. This is really a popcorn movie but at least it`s a bearable one. David`s Comments A cheerful, innocuous film about cheerleaders which is utterly predictable, but which doesn`t take itself too seriously. (It makes you think that the Americans are VERY strange, though).
