Written and directed by Sean Ellis, Cashback is the feature length version of his Oscar nominated short of the same name. The feature film expands on similar themes raised in the 19 minute short, as well as exploring time-manipulation and memory.
Ben, having broken up with his girlfriend develops chronic insomnia. To wile away the hours, he takes a night job in a supermarket packing shelves. Here he meets a motley group of misfits who keep him company and prevent him wallowing in self-pity.
As Ben has not slept in weeks his imagination is quite furtive to say the least. He has the ability to alter time by freezing characters mid scene, allowing him to walk among them; contemplating life, love and beauty.
I thought this device was most interesting although a little over used at times.
Cashback is basically a romantic comedy with a good dose of 'American Pie" but thankfully not as puerile. Its off-beat English humour and sensibility together with some terrific performances elevate this film above the usual fare"¦
If you like your comedy a little off beat Cashback is for you. 3 stars.
