Nineteen years after it first hit the box office, My Best Friend’s Wedding has been remade for a whole new audience.
The Chinese version of the film is set to be released next week just in time for Chinese Valentine’s Day on August 9.
Like P.J. Hogan's original romantic comedy, the mandarin-language remake will follow two childhood friends after one announces he is marrying a wealthy woman who has been studying in the UK. The friend is invited into the bridal party but after realising her true feelings for him, strives to tear the couple apart.
The trailer sees Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz’s famous characters played by Shu Qi and Victoria Song respectively, while Feng Shaofeng steps into Dermot Mulroney’s shoes.
A desperate Qi is seen jetting across the globe (to far-flung locations such as Beijing, London and Italy), to face her love rival Song, before working to break up the couple just days out from their lavish wedding.
Chinese Valentine’s Day, or the Qixi Festival as it is known, falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunar calendar month and many couples who have adopted Western traditions celebrate the day with a date night or trip to the movies.
Couples – and singles – wishing to do the same in Australia will be able to catch the My Best Friend’s Wedding remake with English subtitles in a host of cinemas across the country.
