Aquatica is a hi-tech research station in the middle of the ocean. Saffron Burrows plays a scientist hell bent on saving her project from imminent loss of funds, she`s working on a cure for degenerative brain diseases like Alzheimer`s, experimenting with hormones on shark brains. Samuel L. Jackson is the head of the funding corporation who decides to pay Aquatica a visit to see whether his investment is worth anything. He finds a varied scientific team comprising Stellan Skarsgaard, Jacqueline McKenzie, Michael Rapaport with LL Cool J as the cook and Thomas Jane as the blond, bronzed daredevil who swims with the sharks. But not for long, because these sharks have turned, they now have attitude... Deep Blue Sea is an undeniable trash thriller... however, it`s an enjoyable one, largely because it seems to be very aware of its own silliness... and so does the audience... It`s full of cliches, the troupe is killed one by one... who will ultimately survive? Do we care? Well, not particularly but it`s quite a lot of fun along the way. Character is subordinate to situation here but director Renny Harlin is quite good at action suspense... And it was terrific to see Jacqueline McKenzie in her first big Hollywood movie... I can`t imagine it was a great acting stretch for her, but it was fun actually talking to her and to Renny Harlin about this unashamedly B-grade movie...
