Entertaining David-versus-Goliath story

An inspiring story about a woman with no training who accomplishes amazing things make Erin Brockovich both a crowd pleaser and a good movie.

In 1993, unemployed single mother of three Erin Brockovich, (Julia Roberts), is involved in a minor car accident - which is how she meets small-time lawyer Ed Masry, (Albert Finney).

Wangling her way into a job at his law office, though she has no legal experience and doesn`t exactly inspire confidence with her manner of dress and speech, Erin becomes involved in a case in which a large power company is suspected of polluting the water of a small community - and, while befriending the biker next door, George, (Aaron Eckhart), she throws herself into the challenge of helping a group of distressed families.

This is based on a true story, and the real Erin Brockovich makes a brief appearance, as a waitress, to show that the casting of Julia Roberts wasn`t that off the mark. It`s a thoroughly entertaining David vs Goliath story, in which Roberts, for once, gives a very convincing performance.

The intelligent screenplay by Susannah Grant, has been directed with skill and polish by Stephen Soderberg - when, I wonder, will we see Soderberg`s previous film, The Limey

A fine supporting cast, some dashes of humour, and an inspiring story about a woman with no training who accomplishes amazing things make Erin Brockovich both a crowd pleaser and a good movie.
