Film Fact: Georgia

To celebrate the weird and wonderful Eurovision Song Contest, we present weird and wonderful film facts about this year's finalist countries.

A few years ago, a smart and perceptive hour-long Georgian documentary film called Bakhmaro (pictured) had as its lead character the empty restaurant from which the title derives. Not all Georgian films can be this exciting, though Finnish-born director Renny Harlin, who made Die Hard 2, comes close with the 2011 battle drama 5 Days of War. From the country's capital city of Tbilisi, a handful of films are made each year, and have been, more or less, since 1909 (mostly less). Recent Georgian films have been prized at international film festivals (including Bakhmaro), which is more than their aspiring singers can say about Eurovision contests.
