A casualty of the collapse of the USSR, Moldova's film industry never recovered from the country's shift to independence in 1991. Previously it had been a small but vibrant satellite outpost of the Soviets' film production, its main studio—the imaginatively-titled Moldova-Film—churning out six features, 25 documentaries and 20 'scientific and educational' films per year, every year, between 1952 and 1982. Since independence, however, it has barely featured in festivals, or figured on the radar of most cinema-goers. 2002's Bed of Procust (pictured), a study of a post-coital couple lying in bed thinking of past assignations, had its fans—yet even that film, however, was mostly shot in Bucharest.
