At just 61 square kilometres, and with a population of just over 30,000, San Marino is not exactly a hotbed of international film production—indeed, research reveals only one film to have been shot, even partly, in the city-state: Prince of Foxes (1949), an undistinguished costume drama from 20th Century Fox, notable mostly for the casting of Orson Welles as Cesare Borgia. To its credit, most of the shooting was done in situ, in the actual historical locations referenced—with Rome's Cinecitta Studios providing the interiors. Considering that it offered Welles and his co-star, Tyrone Power, an all-expenses-paid working holiday in Italy, it's not hard to see what attracted the already-obese actor to the project; he was, lest we forget, the man who once said, 'Ask not what you can do for your country; ask what's for lunch.'
