A biologist (Natalie Portman), psychologist (Jennifer Jason Leigh), anthropologist (Gina Rodriguez - 'Jane the Virgin'), and surveyor (Tessa Thompson - 'Westworld') enter a forest.
No, it's not the opening line of a joke or a scientist's dream travel adventure complete with kayaking.
But add in an ominous ambience, bones, fire, guns and backpacks; these scientists ARE afraid of no ghosts. Or whatever it is Natalie Portman is unable to describe to a hazmat suited-up scientist (Benedict Wong) in a scene the trailer consistently cuts back to where Portman's holed up in 'ET' style quarantine.
Her missing husband (Oscar Isaac) makes an appearance, unconscious in a quarantined hospital bed and adds another mysterious, supernatural element.
Adapted from Jeff VanderMeer's award-winning novel by Alex Garland, the first trailer looks like there's a good reason 'Annihilation' is so eagerly anticipated.
The film is due for release in the US, 23 February 2018 (Australia TBC).
