The adventure comedy Fool's Gold starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson has just been released on DVD.
Finn is a treasure hunter obsessed with finding the spoils of an 18th century Queen's Dowry, which was lost at sea. So far it has cost him his boat, his marriage and nearly his life. His luck changes however, when he charms his way aboard an exclusive yacht his ex-wife Tess works on.
Oh dear what a misfire the incredibly unfunny “Fools Gold” is. The screenplay is woeful, with no idea what it wants to be or where it wants to go. The gags are obvious and the situations predictable.
Director Andrew Tennent, best known for his comedy Hitch, has delivered a shallow and clichéd piece of work. Luckily for the filmmakers McConaughey and Hudson's above average chemistry elevates some scenes to a watchable status.
Kate Hudson is good as the frustrated intelligent Tess. She is such an engaging actress to watch. And Mathew McConaughey, who I am not a big fan of, does his best with some pretty silly dialogue.
It is worth mentioning though, the standout performance is from Alexis Dziena who plays the petulant, air-head daughter of the millionaire yacht owner. She was at least a source of humour.
I actually wondered if this film was radically and badly altered in the edit suite because I can not fathom why successful stars like Hudson and McConaughey would sign on to play such grossly unbelievable characters.
If you want to play spot the “talented Aussie” in a really small role, then this film is for you, 1.5 stars.
