Forces of Nature Review

Ben Affleck is Ben, a man on the verge of marriage to Bridget - Maura Tierney - despite general antipathy towards the institution from his friends... He loves her. End of story. But no, not quite. The marriage is taking place in Savannah Georgia which means a flight from New York for Ben who hates flying. An averted disaster before takeoff throws him on the road with fellow passenger Sarah - Sandra Bullock... and it`s the irritation of opposites - she`s the free spirit, he`s the anal retentive...This is a pretty lightweight film, but it does have some things going for it... the prime one being Ben Affleck who displays a disarming art for comedy, confirming the talent he brought to Shakespeare in Love ... and just when you thought you`d had enough of Sandra Bullock she brings slightly more to her role as a women who deflects life rather than embracing it... Add to the mix Marc Lawrence`s screenplay which veers away from expectations and actually seems to attempt to work out what love is all about... and relative newcomer Bronwyn Hughes` direction which brings a fable-like quality to the story. A solid supporting cast which includes Blythe Danner, Ronnie Cox and Steve Zahn helps solidify a seemingly fairy floss movie...David`s Comment:Familiar territory - It Happened One Night meets Planes Trains and Automobiles - but terrific performances from Affleck and Bullock and a few unexpected elements give this a special quality. Bullock is especially good as the background to her disruptively wacky character is revealed.
