Friday Night Lights presents a gritty, frenetic and realistic view of American football. But for the uninitiated its themes are universal. Parents living vicariously through their children, a whole town pinning its hopes and identity on the shoulders of teenage boys who are pushed to breaking point. Billy Bob Thornton draws heavily on his own upbringing to deliver a strong and authentic performance. Brilliantly adapted and directed this real tale not only captures the action of this sport but plunges you into the deeper social dramas that exist in all fields of athletic endeavour.
