Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby will open the 66th Cannes Film Festival, organisers have confirmed via a tweet from the festival's official account.

The announcement ends weeks of speculation that Luhrmann's much-delayed film (originally slated to release in December) would open the event, which takes place on the French riviera from May 15 to 26.

It is the second time Luhrmann's work has opened the premier event. In 2001 his Moulin Rouge! kicked off the 54th edition of the festival, and screened in competition for the Palm d'Or. (Luhrmann's first feature, Strictly Ballroom, screened in Un Certain Regard). The Great Gatsby, a 3D film, will screen out of competition at the opening ceremony on May 15.
