A top cast will assemble in Sydney tomorrow, for the start of production of The Daughter, a dysfunctional family drama set in the dying days of a NSW logging town.
Geoffrey Rush, Sam Neill and Miranda Otto headline the drama, which marks the full-length feature film debut of writer/director Simon Stone, who directed a segment of last year’s The Turning (starring Cate Blanchett and Richard Roxburgh). Stone makes the leap to features after a lengthy career directing theatre (The Daughter is inspired by Stone’s own re-work of Henry Ibsen’s The Wild Duck).
The main action takes place in the lead-up to a father’s (played by Rush) remarriage, when a son (played by Paul Schneider of Bright Star fame), uncovers a long-buried secret, and endeavours to right the wrongs of the past.
Others in the cast include Ewen Leslie, Anna Torv, and rising star Odessa Young.
The film will be produced by Fate Films with Jan Chapman and Nicole O’Donohue, who both saw Stone’s production of The Wild Duck at Sydney’s Belvoir Street Theatre and saw its potential for adaptation to the screen.
The Daughter will be distributed by Roadshow Films in Australia and New Zealand.
