If you haven’t heard of Aaron Mooy by now you mustn’t be listening hard enough. The bald-headed Australian midfielder, who plays for Huddersfield Town in the EPL, is the subject of some serious hype.

But who is Aaron Mooy really, and what do you need to know about him before he becomes Australia’s next big sporting hero? Glad you asked…

1. He’s the most expensive Australian footballer... ever!

Despite being only 27 years old, Aaron Mooy is getting that money, honey. The midfielder was on loan from Manchester City to Huddersfield Town before joining Huddersfield on a permanent deal at the start of the 2017-18 season. Mooy signed on the dotted line for a casual $10 million pounds, that’s more than $16 million AUD for those of you playing at home.

2. He helped Huddersfield Town into the EPL for the first time since 1972

Huddersfield Town weren’t expected to earn promotion to the Premier League this season, but with Mooy weaving his magic in the midfield, the club returned to the top flight for the first time in 45 years. Along the way, Mooy scored four goals, including a crucial penalty against Reading in the last game of the 2016-17 season.

3. He moved to England when he was just 16 years old

Mooy followed the well-trodden path for many footballers and packed up his life at a young age to pursue his dreams. He moved from Sydney’s western suburbs at just 16 after joining Bolton Wanderers. He would then trade England for Scotland before returning home in 2012 to join the Western Sydney Wanderers in the A-League.

4. He went to the same high school as Harry Kewell

Westfield Sports High, also known as the Fairfield Football Factory, has a reputation for producing the most talented sports stars in Australia. Kewell was a graduate of the high school and so was Mooy.

5. He’s already got a song in his honour

Meanwhile, Mooy’s smooth head is also the topic of Huddersfield Town chants. Sung to the tune of Boney M's 1978 hit "Hooray! Hooray! It’s a Holi-Holiday!", the song goes, “Aaron Mooy, Aaron Mooy. Aaron, Aaron Mooy. He’s got no hair, but we don’t care. Aaron, Aaron Mooy.”

6. He and his mum have matching tattoos

Mooy is of Dutch heritage, and on his left shoulder, he has the words "Leven, Lachen, Liefde" tattooed, which translate to "Live, Love, Laugh". His mother, Sam, has the same words on her wrist. Aaron also has his daughter's name, Skylar, on his right forearm.

7. He scored a 40-metre free kick against Brazil

Very few Australian footballers can say they’ve scored a legendary free kick against Brazil, but Mooy can. Back in 2009 at the Under 20s FIFA World Cup, Australia played Brazil. Despite losing 3-1, the highlight came when Mooy, just 19 at the time, lashed a free kick from 40 metres out, scoring Australia’s only goal of the match.
