Nicolas Cage is Memphis Raines, a former superior car thief who`s opted out for the straight life... that`s until younger brother Kip (Giovanni Ribisi) stupidly falls foul of head car thief Raymond Calitri (Christopher Eccleston). Calitri uses Kip to get Memphis back into the game - he wants 50 specified cars within 72 hours or Kip becomes scrap human... Memphis unwillingly assembles his old cronies including Jackson (Will Patton), Halliwell (Robert Duvall) and Sway Wayland (Angelina Jolie) to meet the deadline. A series of major heists are planned despite the fact that a cop played by Delroy Lindo notes Memphis` return to town and is breathing down their necks... This is a fill in the colour by numbers film... the shame is that the cast, which includes three Oscar winners is totally wasted on cardboard characters and truly inane dialogue. The writer was Scott Rosenberg who started out promisingly with Things To Do In Denver When You`re Dead but has been seduced into big budget no-brainers. This is maybe a film for rev heads because the only thing in it worth watching are the car chases...David`s Comment: In every sense, a cluttered film. Too many characters, so that not enough time is given to people like Vinnie Jones, Robert Duvall or even Angelia Jolie. A cluttered visual style, too, which spoils the action scenes by shooting and cutting them as if in a blur - you can hardly see what"s happening, and it*s annoying. The story`s thin, too. But when the film does take off, as in the final incredible stunt, it`s not unenjoyable.
