Granny Smith wins Tropfest

The cringeworthy story of a sickie that sets off a snowball of deceit has taken out the Tropfest short film festival for 2014.

Granny Smith, by Victorian-based director Julian Lucas, takes things to awkward extremes, when a friend lies about the death of his grandmother, to get a few days off work. Funnyman Steve Vizard features in a cameo as the man’s unexpectedly compassionate employer.

Margaret Pomeranz announced the winner at Tropfest’s live event at Centennial Park, to a gathering of die-hard filmgoers who braved Sydney’s summer storms to stick it out at the venue.

Sydney’s stormy weather wreaked havoc with plans earlier in the day, with organisers at one point calling off the event and evacuating the area, and NSW police tweeting revellers to delay their travel by at least one hour, to avoid the worst of the electrical storms.  After a 30 minute interval, organisers announced that the show would go on, albeit to reduced numbers.
